At an early age, Bright developed a love for music and performing. As a teenager he toured Europe with his father's band and then took up playing the violin professionally. His first major success came at the age of twenty-two when he played at the Royal Albert Hall in London.

John Bright began teaching at St. Paul's School in 1874. He soon embarked on a career as a music teacher and performer which eventually led him to becoming Headmaster of St.

Paul's School in 1887 where he remained for ten years. Bright was appointed Principal of Shrewsbury School in 1888 and remained there until 1893 when he became Headmaster of Uppingham School where he stayed until 1900 when he became Master of Trinity College School in Hartford, Connecticut. While living in Hartford, John Bright continued to teach at Trinity College High School where he taught for over twenty-five years until his retirement in 1926.

John Bright married Jane Perry on May 3, 1885; they had four children: Mary (born 1886), Jane (born 1886), Eugene (born 1889) and Hugh (born 1895). Jane died on November 24, 1909; she was fifty years old at the time of her death.
